The Classic at Silverstone meeting saw some changes for 2022 not least a change of date away from its traditional end of July slot to the August Bank Holiday weekend. Along with this change came the addition of a foodie area that included a farmers market and cooking demonstrations and an electric car demonstration and test drive area. The core of the event remained the racing which saw no fewer than thirteen grids for historic race cars plus the addition of a race for contemporary GT4 cars. The races included single seaters, sports cars and touring cars. The oldest race being the BRDC500 for pre-war cars moving right up to more recent times with the Masters Endurance Legends and the GT4’s. As with previous years Friday was all qualifying for the classes with the races taking place on Saturday and Sunday.

Off track there was plenty to keep visitors occupied. As in previous years there was a host of car clubs ranging from the Mini, Ford’s and Vauxhall up to Ferrari, Lamborghini and Bentley. There were demonstrations by historic rally cars, drag racing and stunt displays from the World famous Terry Grant. In the Silverstone Wing an auction was held with the star lot being a Ford Escort previously owned by Princess Dianna. As always at the Classic meeting the racing paddocks were also open for public to see the race cars close up. The foodie area proved popular and had a prominent position on the infield with a number of well known chefs  providing demonstrations while the farmers market included a stall from Clarkson’s Diddly Squat farm shop.

Apart from the car clubs there were also a number of special displays. There was a display of all the Championship winning Formula One cars driven by Sir Lewis Hamilton joined by representation cars from a number of the current Formula One teams. Alongside this was a display of vehicles used in the filming of the latest James Bond films including the latest  the latest representations of the iconic Aston Martin. In the Wing paddock there was a display of Group C sports prototype cars that had bought together a number of the famous Rothmans Porsches and Silk Cut Jaguars along with other marques from that era. There was also a shopping area with stall selling all things automobile related along with clothing and art. The village green area also had a selection of street food vendors, a bar, fairground and live music from Bamboozle, popular and regular performers at the Classic meeting. Visitors were also able to enjoy live music on the mainstage following the racing each day.

For 2023 the event will return rebranded as the Silverstone Festival, again held on the August bank holiday. Further details can be found by visiting www.silverstone.co.uk
