The small Cambridgeshire village of Gorefield again held its heavy horse show as part of the village fete. The small but popular event again attracted a good entry of local Shire horses along with Percherons and Suffolks and saw in-hand classes in the morning with turnouts later in the day followed by a grand parade.

The Shire classes, judged by David Yates, began with the largest class of the day, geldings 3yrs and over, with six entries where Ruskington Kenny owned by Karen Bond and shown by Lucy Blakey took the J.L.Cooper Cup. Next up was the barren mare class with two forward. Having made the journey from Barnsbridge in Lincolnshire it was Will Boulderstone’s Laurel Bank Queen Victoria who won the Jim King Shield shown by Amy Hornsey. There was further success for them as Barnsbridge Ruby, now owned by Charlotte Turner-Smith and shown by Oliver Chaffey of Barnsbridge Shires won the G.S.Hammond Cup for best yearling. The Shire classes concluded with the two-year-olds with just Chorley’s Commodore forward, owned and shown by Pip Read he won the Harold Reeve Cup. The Champion Shire went to Ruskington Kenny with gelding Stanmar Trump Card owned and shown by Jo Wadsworth reserve.

Davgue George Champion Percheron, owned and shown by Mary Fuller

The Percheron class saw five forward for judge Owen Garner which included two horses he had bred. This saw a second judge join him to decide the placings to ensure no bias was shown. Gelding Davgue George owned by R.&S.A.Fuller and shown by Mary Fuller was declared Champion with Hales Minos, another of Fullers geldings reserve shown by Emma Scotney. The Suffolk class was also judged by Owen Garner and saw four forward. Champion Suffolk went to gelding Monty owned and shown by Sue Adams with Pickworth Honesty owned by Andrea Hoskins in reserve.

The mixed breed classes got underway with the pairs class where a single handler shows a pair of horses of a matched size and breed. It was the Percheron pair Locust Creek Hawk & Park Casey shown by Joanne Henfrey who won the Healy Hire Trophy with Pip Read second with her Shire pair, Cragg Hall Connor & Lancashire Premier King. The young handler class well supported with seven handlers forward to be judged by Owen Garner and David Yates. Unsurprisingly it was the experienced Lucy Blakey with Ruskington Kenny who won the Wisbech Standard Trophy with Luke Hunns second showing Hales Midas and Steph Thorpe third showing Shire Decoy Royal Revelation. The White & Eddy Shield for best horse in harness went to Pip Read with Cragg Hall Connor. Six were forward to be judged by Mrs Sally Giddens in the ridden class which saw Emily Sanderson take first riding her Shire. Later in the day the single horse turnout was won by Joanne Henfrey driving Park Casey with a Ladies Cart. Four more trophies were awarded at the grand parade. Best shod horse went to Sue Adams Suffolk Monty while the Barclays Bank Trophy for exhibitor with most points was won by Pip Read. The Shire Horse Society silver spoon was won by Will Boulderstone’s Laurel Bank Queen Victoria and the Dick Smith Cup for best turned out Shire was won by Jo Wadsworth’s Stanmar Trump Card.
